Adoption Process in Ohio

The adoption process in Ohio is very simple:

1. The first step is to contact our agency by telephone at: (513) 321-2229

You will speak with our agency director, Sheryl Linne, who will be able to answer your questions about our agency and about the adoption process in Ohio . Or you may contact us by completing the contact form.

2. After this initial contact, you will be put in contact with one of our pregnancy counselors (a licensed social worker) who will provide pregnancy counseling. Your meeting with our social worker will include a discussion of your options as well as information regarding support services that are available to you should you decide to parent.

3. If you decide that you would like to go forward with an adoption plan, your social worker will help you to complete the Social and Medical History form so that the adoptive parents will have a medical history for the baby’s doctor.

4. You will also complete a form which permits or denies your child the right to obtain identifying information about you when the child turns 18.

5. Your social worker will also help you decide on the amount of openness you want in your adoption plan. This may range from a closed adoption (where you receive no on going information after the birth) to a semi-open adoption (where you receive pictures and letters from the adoptive family several times each year), to an open adoption (where you have periodic visits with the adoptive family and baby).

6. Next, you will be given profiles of adoptive families that match your description of the perfect family for your baby. You may select a family from reviewing these profiles and you may interview the family you select.

7. Next we wait for the birth of your baby! After the birth occurs, Ohio requires a 72 hour waiting period so that you can be certain that you want to go forward with your adoption plan. Your baby will remain in
the hospital during this time. After 72 hours, the agency director and your social worker will visit you either at the hospital or in your home so that you can sign the Permanent Surrender document. When this is completed, your baby goes home with the adoptive parents directly from the hospital. There is no foster care involved in this process!

8. Your social worker will remain available to you to provide counseling for as long as you request at no charge to you. We are here to help you complete the adoption plan that you make for your baby and to help you to continue to feel proud of that decision!
